In the 2019 Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's play Betrayal, which is about an illicit affair that develops in reverse, Hiddleston and Ashton starred opposite one another. Hiddleston played Robert, a man whose wife (played by Ashton) has an affair with his best friend, and was nominated for a Tony Award for the portrayal (Charlie Cox). At the Tony Awards in September, where Betrayal received four nominations, the pair made their red carpet debut.
Hiddleston, who has a long history of secrecy and whose dating life includes a highly documented romance with Taylor Swift, stated to The Telegraph in 2017 that he prefers to keep information about his love life apart from his life as a public figure.
Everybody has a right to a private life, he declared. "I absolutely commit to creating excellent art and excellent entertainment because I love what I do and I don't see any conflict between the two. Although I have a private existence, my work is done in the public eye. And the two of those are distinct."
Hiddleston said to EW last year, when asked about the future of the once-dead antihero, "I'm willing to do anything. I've bid the character farewell. I've greeted the character. I bid the character farewell once more. I guess I've learnt to avoid making assumptions. I'm just happy to be alive and that there are still uncharted territories to discover."
