Was it a slip-up or a strategic move? The captivating Karen Gillan, star of Jumanji, has brought a fresh take to the off-the-shoulder look that left tongues wagging at the premiere of her latest movie in Austin, Texas. Unlike other actresses who unintentionally reveal their undergarments on the red carpet, Gillan's scarlet frock, part of the spring-summer collection from the Italian design house No 21, was intentionally crafted to showcase her baby-pink satin underwear.
This same dress was also donned in a similar way on the catwalk during the Milan Fashion Week. Nevertheless, the Scottish actress opted for a more reserved look earlier in the day during a Q&A session for the movie.
Late Bloomers, Gillan's indie comedy-drama, sees her portraying a purposeless musician who gets inebriated and injures her hip, forcing her to undergo physical therapy alongside the elderly. Gillan enjoyed this experience of working on a smaller budget film, as opposed to the grandeur of a Marvel blockbuster. She explains that it was refreshing to be a part of a collaborative effort, without the opulence of a trailer filled with endless snacks.
It's not the first time Gillan's attire has sparked a conversation. Her outfit in Jumanji, consisting of tiny shorts and a crop top, drew attention as her male counterparts were more appropriately attired. Gillan, however, brushed it off, stating that the attire highlighted the absurdity of the male fantasy trope found in 1990s video games. Nevertheless, the wardrobe malfunction term became popularized after Janet Jackson's infamous 2004 Super Bowl performance with Justin Timberlake, where he ripped off part of her costume, exposing her breast with a nipple shield.
While many speculated that it was a calculated move, Timberlake issued an apology for the incident. Similarly, Fifty Shades of Gray star Dakota Johnson experienced a wardrobe mishap at an awards show in LA in 2016, but took it in stride, quipping that it wasn't like nobody had seen her breasts before.
